Bethesda Has One Project in “Full Production”, New Animation System Discussed

Could Director Todd Howard's comments indicate a game close to release?

Bethesda Game Studios may not have produced a full length game since Fallout 4 released in 2015 but the studio has been working on new projects. This has been hinted at a number of times but in a new interview with Insomniac CEO Ted Price for the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Game Maker’s Notebook, Fallout 4 director Todd Howard discussed the status of those projects a bit more.

One project is currently in pre-production and will be using a new animation system that Bethesda is currently developing. It’s worth noting that pre-production could last for several years so when this will eventually release is anyone’s guess. The other project is in “full production” however, and uses the “old” animation system, which most likely refers to Fallout 4’s system.

Howard also talked about how the animation team working on the latter project is excited to work on the new animation system when the former project is ready to start rolling out. Perhaps it’s an indication that the project in “full production” is set to release soon. However, later on in the interview, Howard also talked about the challenges of completing a game.

“You forget. If you haven’t moved in a while, moving is terrible. Or having a child. Not terrible! But the pressures of it, you forget how hard it is to finish a game,” he said. Could it be that Howard is facing these challenges currently and is thus remembering them?

Anything seems possible but we’ll likely learn more about this project, whether it’s Starfield or something else, at E3 2018.
