Final Fantasy 16 Failed to Meet Square Enix’s Expectations

Despite the game's strong initial sales, Final Fantasy 16 has seemingly failed to reach Square Enix's sales expectations.

In a recent earnings call, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu has revealed that, similar to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Final Fantasy 16 has also failed to hit sales targets. According to Bloomberg, Kiryu’s statement indicated that sales of Final Fantasy 16 had slowed down after the sales during the game’s launch period.

It is worth noting that Final Fantasy 16 was released exclusively on the PS5, and while a PC port is currently in the works, the game hasn’t yet been released on any other platform. This likely had quite a bit to do with the game failing to hit Square Enix’s sales expectations.

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida recently spoke about games he had worked on, where he also revealed that he was impressed that Square Enix greenlit the required budget for Final Fantasy 16s high development costs.

Final Fantasy 16 was released back in June 2023. Since then, the game has seen the release of two expansions in the form of Echoes of the Fallen, and The Rising Tide. For more details, check out our reviews of the base game, Echoes of the Fallen, and The Rising Tide.
