Horizon is now an undisputed hit, and potentially a major tentpole franchise for Sony going forward. So of course, Horizon is going to become a part of gaming vernacular and vocabulary from here on forth- so it does beg the question, how did Sony and Guerrilla Games arrive at the name?
Speaking in r/horizon’s AMA, a few developers from Guerrilla Games decided to answer that question, noting that it was chosen mostly for its thematic trappings (more than narrative significance). “For us, “Horizon” represents a boundless new world, and also the passage of time (where the Sun rises and sets) that is so fundamental to the setting and story.”
Which makes sense- and there are worse reasons to choose a name for your game. Of course, now that Horizon is likely to be a series, it’ll be interesting to see if the name can be as relevant for future games as it is to this one. At any rate, Horizon is a better name than ‘Killzone‘.
