Horizon: Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds DLC Is ‘Mid to End-Game In Terms of Difficulty’

"We wanted to do all the things that the main game did."

Horizon: Zero Dawn will soon be getting its first (and confirmed to be only) bit of post launch paid DLC soon, in the form of The Frozen WildsThe Frozen Wilds promises to be a major story expansion for the hit open world action RPG, and will see Aloy go into a brand new area.

But what prompted the decision to work on this story content? What are Guerrilla Games’ aspirations with this new slice of Aloy’s story? Lead Writer Ben McCaw, speaking to OPM UK (issue #142, December 2017), said that the new expansion is meant to achieve everything that the base game did, while also giving Aloy more relationships and fresh cultures and characters to delve into.

“What we’re seeing in the DLC is a border zone between the Carja and the Banuk, it’s a disputed territory, it’s a very dangerous territory. It’s also primarily inhabited by the Banuk, so there’s been a lot of back and forth and warfare between the Carja and the Banuk, who have kind of settled into this area,” he said.

“With writing The Frozen Wilds we wanted to do all the things that the main game did. So we wanted to provide a new area, a new culture, but we also wanted to give Aloy relationships to delve into and ultimately a storyline that does what a lot of other quests in the game do.”

McCaw also confirmed that in terms of difficulty, Guerrilla considers The Frozen Wilds to be the equivalent of mid- to end-game content in the base game. “We consider it to be more of a mid-to-end game in terms of the difficulty set.”

What this should mean is, if you have already finished the game, you should find a brand new, hefty challenge befitting your mastery of the game’s mechanics awaiting you. If you have not yet finished the game, well, the good news is that you will have something substantial to look forward to when you do. Horizon: Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds launches on November 7, only on the PS4.
