In many ways, Mortal Kombat owes its existence to Jean-Claude Van Damme, with Midway Games originally having set out to make a fighting game based on the famous action actor three decades ago, before pivoting to turning it into the series we all know and love. Of course, a little bit of the action still made it into the game, with fan-favourite character Johnny Cage being based on him. And interestingly enough, the upcoming series reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, is going full circle.

It’s been known for a while that Mortal Kombat 1 will let players play a version of Johnny Cage that will not only have the likeness of Van Damme, but will also be voiced by him, and NetherRealm Studios has released a new trailer that highlights what to expect on that front. Van Damme Cage takes on several opponents in the trailer and dishes out plenty of bloody moves, including a particularly gory Fatality against the actual Johnny Cage at the end. You can view the trailer below.

Recently, Nitara was also confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1’s roster of main fighters. She is being played by Megan Fox of Transformers fame.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can view some recently-leaked footage of the Switch version through here.
