EA’s wider multi-studio Battlefield team has gone through some significant disruptions of late, with Ridgeling Games – the studio that was established to create narrative-driven Battlefield experiences – having been shuttered. Prior to that, EA announced that Need for Speed and Burnout developer Criterion Games had joined that larger team, and now, another notable studio has been added to that list.

Byron Beede, who is general manager of Battlefield at EA, has announced in an update that Motive Studio – the team behind Star Wars: Squadrons and 2023’s Dead Space remake – is also working on Battlefield, joining DICE, the aforementioned Criterion Games, and Ripple Effect Studios, which is rumoured to be working on a standalone free-to-play battle royale Battlefield game.

In a separately published update, Motive Studios’ general manager Patrick Klaus has confirmed that the new Battlefield-centric team within the studio will be led by Philippe Ducharme and Roman Campos-Oriola, who were Dead Space’s executive producer and creative director respectively.

“Motive Studio – the talented developers known most recently for their work on the critically acclaimed remake of Dead Space and Star Wars: Squadrons – are building a team focused on Battlefield at their studio,” said Byron Beede. “We’re tremendously excited for Motive, as they are bringing their expertise with Frostbite and compelling storytelling to the fold, joining DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect in building a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer experiences and single-player.”

“A group of developers from Motive are joining the talented teams at Criterion, DICE, and Ripple Effect to continue unlocking the full potential of Battlefield,” wrote Patrick Klaus. “The directors who delivered our Dead Space remake in 2023, Philippe Ducharme and Roman Campos-Oriola, will build a team at Motive to work alongside the Battlefield studios around the world creating what’s next for Battlefield– a universe across both multiplayer and single-player experiences. Their proven expertise in storytelling, immersive battles and developing on the Frostbite engine uniquely positions them to help advance the vision for Battlefield, led by Vince Zampella and Byron Beede.”

Motive is, of course, also working on a single player, narrative-driven action-adventure Iron Man game. Klaus says development on the title, which is being led by a separate team within the studio, is continuing, and recently hit a major internal milestone. Read more on that through here.
