The line-up also features a PlayStation One-stylized DualSense, DualSense Edge, PlayStation Portal, and PS5 Digital Edition.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Sony has announced a limited edition line-up of PS5 consoles and accessories that evoke the PlayStation One’s aesthetic. That’s right – you can own a PS5 Pro or PS5 Digital Edition in the classic grey shade. Check out the trailer below – the line-up launches on November 21st.

The PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle includes the console, a DualSense and DualSense Edge, and the DualSense Charging Station. It even has a console cover for the disc drive (still sold separately, unfortunately). Fortunately, it has a Vertical Stand and some collector’s items, including cable ties based on the PlayStation Shapes.

The PS5 Digital Edition 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle includes the same items and Vertical Stand, albeit with only one DualSense and a console cover. You can also pick up 30th Anniversary Limited Edition versions of the PlayStation Portal, DualSense and DualSense Edge.

Of course, quantities are limited – the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle will only have 12,300 units, each etched with numbers indicating the date of the PS One’s launch. Pre-orders for the bundle alongside the PlayStation Portal and DualSense Edge (standalone) begin on September 26th via PlayStation Direct and retailers.

The same applies to the PS5 Digital Edition bundle from PlayStation Direct, though pre-orders at retailers start on October 10th. Finally, the DualSense Wireless (standalone) is only available to pre-order from retailers on September 26th.

Meanwhile, the “regular” PS5 Pro launches on November 7th, retailing for $699.99.
Costing the same as the current DualSense controller, it differs in height, width and depth while weighing 80 grams less.

While Sony has released various colors for the DualSense and the DualSense Edge, it could be gearing up to refresh the base controller. @NextGenPlayer on Twitter spotted a listing on Best Buy Canada for the DualSense V2, which promises an “Exceptional 12-hour battery life on a full charge.” Of course, the current DualSense touts the same battery life, which can vary heavily.

It doesn’t seem to offer any other unique features or differ in price, though the height, width and depth are all noticeably less than the regular DualSense. The DualSense V2 is also a good 80 grams lighter, which should help for longer sessions. The listing could be erroneous, but given the different model numbers, it may be a light refresh and nothing more.

Sony has yet to confirm the existence of a new DualSense, so stay tuned for potential announcements in the coming months. The company recently celebrated over 50 million lifetime sales of the PlayStation 5. It’s expected to sell 25 million units this fiscal year, ending March 31st, 2024.

Developers will have to do some work on their end, but players will soon be able to filter games by the kinds of controllers they support.

Valve has announced an update to Steam that will make it easier for developers to reveal if a game features support for the DualSense controller. With the update to Steamworks, developers and publishers will be able to more easily describe a game’s controller support.

The questionnaire presented to studios and publishers about controller support will affect the game’s Steam store page, allowing companies to pick between “Full Controller Support” or “Partial Controller Support”. There is also an option for special cases for games that might only work with a specific control scheme.

Valve points out that support for DualShock and DualSense controllers isn’t assumed by Steam automatically if there is support for the Xbox controller. The company states that developers will have to do specific work with their games to ensure support for PlayStation controllers.

Players will start seeing new display and filters in October that will allow players to pick games that support the controller that they have available to them. valve mentions that the update is to help the over 87 million players on Steam using at least one controller, according to recent Steam Hardware Surveys.

For studios that might have trouble developing bespoke support for PlayStation controllers, Valve also mentions that Steamworks provides streamlined APIs to help provide a game with PlayStation controller support as long as there is support for Xbox controllers.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's Shawne Benson says, "There's a lot of things we could do and then create marketing stories around."

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been very successful since launching in November 2020. Along with shipping 32.1 million units worldwide, it’s had a steady amount of high-profile exclusives, particularly from third-party companies. That trend continues with Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Silent Hill 2 remake, and much more in the works.

Speaking to GamesIndustry, Shawne Benson, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s third-party portfolio and acquisitions, discussed the company’s strategy for exclusives.

“There’s room for exclusives where it makes sense, obviously, but the focus – especially with a digital distribution model that is more prevalent than in generations past – is that there are different types of gameplay out there. For example, a free-to-play game’s business model is most successful when it’s on as many platforms as possible and brings the biggest audience possible.”

Interestingly, the company isn’t concerned so much about exclusivity as highlighting the PS5’s features. “So that’s thinking about it less around exclusivity than what kind of technologies could they adopt that really make PS5 sing. What kind of innovation can they apply with the haptics in the DualSense or the adaptive triggers?

“What could they do with 3D audio in the sound design of a game, etc? So there’s a lot of things we could do and then create marketing stories around, and that’s where some of these partnerships for multiplatform games really focus.”

Though Sony isn’t explicitly paying developers to implement DualSense, if it’s a “good PlayStation story,” then it may partner with them for marketing and support. Such deals aren’t exactly uncommon in today’s industry. Despite The Callisto Protocol being a multi-platform title, it had PlayStation-exclusive bonuses and DualSense support, while PlayStation Studios Visual Arts lent its motion capture studio.

Given Xbox’s numerous acquisitions, it remains to be seen if Sony can retain its third-party exclusivity momentum in the coming years. Stay tuned in the meantime.

Sony says that's down to having "included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller."

The battery lives of controllers continue to get progressively shorter and shorter, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to be remedied anytime soon. Sony is launching a new, premium controller for the PS5 on January 26 with the “ultra-customizable” DualSense Edge, and though it’s going to be an upgrade over the base controller in several areas, battery life isn’t going to be one of them.

In a statement to The Verge, Sony confirmed that due the DualSense Edge having “many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller”, it will have a “moderately shorter” battery life than the latter.

“The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s operating time is moderately shorter than the original DualSense wireless controller because we’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller,” the company said. “We wanted to strike a good balance between wireless operating time and delivering robust, high-performance features. Additionally, the longer USB braided cable is also great for competitive players who prefer playing with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference – this option preserves battery life.”

Of course, “moderately shorter” is a pretty vague term, so questions will still be asked about what one can expect from the DualSense Edge’s battery exactly. The base DualSense’s battery life isn’t exactly the best, lasting on average about 7-8 eight hours per charge (though it can occasionally last up to 12 hours), so expect a pretty short battery life for the Edge.

Given the fact that the controller will be priced at $199.99, that might not be to everyone’s liking.

3D audio is also supported on the console, and "superfast data streaming" ensures players can explore the town seamlessly.

In a new PlayStation Blog post, Bloober Team revealed that Silent Hill 2 remake is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. Along with tech like Nanite and Lumen for realistic lighting and environments, it’s also using state-of-the-art motion capture for the “best facial expressions in the series.” On top of this, it will support many of the PS5’s features.

This includes the console’s solid-state drive, with “superfast data streaming” ensuring that players won’t experience any loading screens. Silent Hill can be explored seamlessly as a result. The PS5’s 3D audio is also supported, which should help indicate “the exact direction” of sounds, and WWise sound engine creates “a realistic and believable soundscape that helps players feel like they are truly inside the game.”

The DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are also being utilized, though Bloober Team’s Mateusz Lenart didn’t outline how. There will be some “new ideas,” but the team is keeping it a surprise for now.

Silent Hill 2 doesn’t have a release date yet (with Lenart confirming that development isn’t over yet), but it’s coming to PS5 as a 12-month console exclusive and PC.
A new Sony patent describes functionality for the c-stick on the controllers, that would allow users to adjust the height of the thumbstick to their desired height.

It seems PlayStation has been busy ensuring more choices for their console users in the way they use the accessories. Most of these changes are subtle, minor, yet very useful and add some much-needed accessibility to the controller.

For instance, as per a new patent (via coindipender), Sony is trying to give its user the option to adjust the height of the control stick, the main goal being that the c-stick is not sticking out in one place permanently. As per the filings, the abstract reads as follows:

“A controller, thumbstick, or system comprising a thumbstick body, a thumbstick shaft coupled to the thumbstick body wherein the thumbstick shaft is configured to retract into the thumbstick body and wherein the thumbstick body and the thumbstick shaft is freely rotatable together around a pivot center within the controller body.”

The internal filing date for the patent seems to point out that Sony filed it last year on 22 July, and the same got published on 13 January 2022.

The filing indicates that Sony might be working on a new controller, though patents aren’t necessarily always indicative of concrete plans of course. PlayStation’s DualSense controllers are already feature-rich, coming with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, among other features, so having something like this would add to an already pleasant controller experience.

Co-founder Philippe Morin likens to the first two games to movies and says "Your journey to freedom will be a long one" in the 2022 title.

Red Barrels’ The Outlast Trials made a brief reappearance at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showcasing the game’s survival horror atmosphere and gameplay. Unlike previous games, this will be a co-op experience with up to three players surviving the experiments of the Murkoff Corporation in order to escape. In a new interview with PlayStation Blog, studio co-founder Philippe Morin discussed the title and what set it apart from the last two games and also other horror titles.

“If the previous games could be compared to movies, The Outlast Trials is more like a TV Series. Your journey to freedom will be a long one.” This seems to imply some kind of episodic approach to the story, one that could continue post-launch, but it’s not certain. One thing is for sure though – the sequel is being developed on Unreal Engine 4 which helped to “test new ideas and iterate pretty quickly.”

While it wasn’t announced for PS5, it seems that The Outlast Trials could come to the platform eventually. When questioned about PS5 gameplay features like DualSense, Morin said that, “We haven’t thoroughly investigated all these options, but we’re definitely excited by the possibilities. Hopefully, we’ll have more to announce soon.”

The Outlast Trials is currently in development for PC and is slated to release next year.

The Midnight Black version costs $69.99 while the Cosmic Red variant is for $74.99.

Following rumors of the same, Sony has officially announced two new colors for the PS5’s DualSense controller. Launching on June 11th, the Midnight Black and Cosmic Red variants are the first new colors since the console debuted. Check out how they look in the trailer below.

While the Midnight Black controller is modeled after space when viewed via the nighttime sky on Earth, Cosmic Red is meant to evoke the cosmos’ various shades of red. The former will retail for $69.99 while the latter will cost $74.99. Though available worldwide on June 11th, availability will vary based on one’s local retailers.

As the DualSense gains new color variants, perhaps we’ll start seeing different colors for the PS5 as well in the coming months. With demand for the console still out-stripping supplies (which could last throughout the year, as per Sony), it may be unlikely. Nevertheless, stay tuned for more updates in the coming months.
