Based on Guerrilla's acclaimed 2017 open-world action RPG, the rumored remaster could receive an official announcement soon.

With rumors circulating for years about a remaster for Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, it seems an official announcement is coming. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in the United States recently rated the title for PS5 and PC.

Little else is known, aside from it being rated “T” for Teen. However, rumors emerged in 2022 about a remaster for the acclaimed 2017 open-world action RPG that allegedly features overhauled textures and animations, improved lighting, graphics modes, accessibility features, and quality-of-life features.

A leaked document subsequently began circulating, further pointing to the title’s existence. Last year, we saw a report alleging Guerrilla isn’t developing the remaster and that a different team is in charge.

Time will tell, so stay tuned for an official announcement. In the meantime, Guerrilla is developing LEGO Horizon Adventures with Studio Gobo. Launching on November 14th, per PlayStation’s official site (before it was pulled), the family-friendly adaption of Horizon Zero Dawn will launch for PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

"We have definitely bent the rules a lot. But the characters remain core to who they are," says James Windeler, narrative director at Guerrilla.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is shouldering the responsibility of broadening the successful PlayStation IP’s appeal much further, and it’s attempting to do that in several ways. Part of that is, of course, the fact that it will also release for Nintendo Switch, but with its LEGO theming, it’s also clearly going for a much younger audience than the main Horizon series. But with LEGO Horizon Adventures set to retell the story of Horizon Zero Dawn, how exactly is it going to keep its contents suitable for a younger audience, especially considering how stark and apocalyptic some of the late-game narrative reveals can get?

Speaking during a recent interview with GamesIndustry, James Windeler, narrative director at Guerrilla – which is co-developing the game alongside Studio Gobo – touched on the same, revealing that LEGO Horizon Adventures is going to take a lot of creative liberties with Zero Dawn’s story. Specifically, Windeler explained that some of the original story’s darker elements are going to be either removed or de-emphasized in the upcoming LEGO game, while the general tone is, of course, also going to be much more lighthearted.

“We have tried to keep as much of the story as possible,” he said. “A lot of what happens in the world, like the destruction of the old world… that’s a pretty heavy theme for an eight-year-old. So we needed to find ways to keep that present in the story, because it is essential to Horizon. But it is also not something we leaned on. You won’t find some of those devastating reveals from the first game, like those corporate masterminds dead around the table or anything like that.

“There are moments from the first game that packs a really heavy emotional punch, that we’ve found, I think, a very good way to represent faithfully, but undercut them with comedy that keeps things light-hearted. This stuff is present, but it’s certainly not surface. This is a much simpler version, but it has a lot of echoes from the original.”

Windeler added that though LEGO Horizon Adventures’ tone is going to be different from the main Horizon series, the characters “remain core to who they are”, which, as per him, is thanks in part to the fact that many of the original actors are reprising their roles.

“It has still got to feel like Horizon,” he said. “We have definitely bent the rules a lot. But the characters remain core to who they are. I think we’ve found a really good balance with it. We have a lot of help. Ashley Burch is back as the voice of Aloy, and JB Blanc as Rost. And you would have heard the exuberance to their performances. It is different to what the other games are, but they’re still recognizable. They’re part of it and they bought into it, and that’s been a huge boon to us.”

LEGO Horizon Adventures is due out this Holiday for PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A specific release date hasn’t yet been announced.

The series has reportedly been cancelled amidst allegations of problematic workplace behaviour against Steve Blackman, who was set to be its showrunner.

With the likes of The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Twisted Metal, Sony has already enjoyed a fair bit of success with its TV and film adaptations of PlayStation properties, while plenty more are in the pipeline as well. Not all of them, however, are going to be able to see the light of day, it seems like.

Specifically, it looks like Netflix’s adaptation of Guerrilla and Sony’s Horizon series has been shelved. As reported by Rolling Stone, the show’s alleged cancellation comes amidst allegations of “a long history of toxic, bullying, manipulative, and retaliatory behavior” in the workplace against Steven Blackman. Blackman is best known as the showrunner of Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, and was set to serve in the same capacity on Horizon.

Whether that means Netflix will find a new showrunner for the Horizon series to move forward with is anyone’s guess, but for now, it doesn’t look like plans for the series are going to move forward- at least not in the way may had expected.

Outside of Horizon, Sony is currently working with various external partners on new or continued adaptations of its PlayStation properties, including a second season of The Last of Us, a second Uncharted movie, a movie based on Ghost of Tsushima, an Amazon Prime show based on God of War, and more.

Later this year, Sony will release a new Horizon spinoff game, LEGO Horizon Adventures, co-developed by Studio Gobo and Guerrilla. It will release for PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

These single player classics can be picked up for shockingly low prices right now.

Gaming can be a pretty expensive hobby, and with AAA publishers across the industry deciding that they’re going to sell their new flagship releases at a higher price point of $70 instead of the $60 that had been the standard for so long, it’s getting more expensive still. Thankfully, however, prices of games tend to fluctuate, often going down to levels where the only way to describe a deal is as an absolute steal. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such standout single player games – or games that might not be exclusively single player but are still perfectly viable solo experiences – that you can get for shockingly cheap prices at the time of writing.

CUPHEAD

Let’s start with one that’s actually always been cheap. Studio MDHR’s Cuphead is a modern run ‘n gun classic, boasting stellar art and animations, devilishly punishing yet brilliantly designed boss fights, and a healthy amount of content, with the entire package setting you back just $20. Throw in another $8, and you can also purchase its excellent expansion, The Delicious Last Course.

MONSTER HUNTER WORLD

Capcom sells its back catalog titles better than most other companies out there, and just as responsible for that as their enduring quality is the prices they drop down to. Monster Hunter World, Capcom’s highest selling game of all time, is currently prices at $20, which, for a game as good as it is and as much content it has, is a ridiculously good price.

RESIDENT EVIL 7

Another relatively older Capcom title that has lost none of its luster in the years since its launch, Resident Evil 7 is a game that also keeps on selling, and looking at its price, it’s easy to see why. Sure, it may not be the hundred-hour romp that Monster Hunter World is, but can you really turn your nose up at one of the best survival horror games of all time being sold for just $20?

THE EVIL WITHIN

We’ll stick with the survival horror genre here, and turn our attention to a nearly-decade old game that perhaps doesn’t get the sort of love it deserves. For fans of the over-the-shoulder Resident Evil formula, The Evil Within is an absolute must-play, thanks to its incredible atmosphere and relentlessly tense combat. At just $20, the game’s an absolute bargain, and one that any genre fan should be pouncing on.

STARDEW VALLEY

Indie darling Stardew Valley has never really been a costly game, given the fact that it’s, well, an indie game, which means it’s always been an absolute steel. Being sold at $15, this is a game that you can pour literally hundreds upon hundreds of hours into. Want to manage and expand your farm? Want to hang out with cool characters and deepen your bonds with them? Want to go exploring caves? In Stardew Valley, you can do all of this and more.

HOLLOW KNIGHT

You may have heard Hollow Knight being called one of the greatest games ever made by many, and trust us, that’s not an exaggeration in the slightest. This grueling Metroidvania masterpiece is an astounding piece of art, representing game design, music, art, and everything else in between at their absolute zenith. Again, by virtue of being an indie game, Hollow Knight has always offered incredible value for money, as it does right now for a price of just $15.

UNCHARTED: THE NATHAN DRAKE COLLECTION

The original Uncharted trilogy is pretty old at this point (he said while setting down his walking cane), but Naughty Dog’s action-adventure games are still worth going back to, not least because of the excellent remastering work that Bluepoint Games did with The Nathan Drake Collection on PS4. The collection can be bought for the price of just $20, which gives you access to not one, but three riotously enjoyable games, making it a pretty sweet deal all in all.

THE LAST OF US REMASTERED

Naughty Dog loves going back to The Last of Us, but even though we do have a full-fledged remake as an option on PS5, the PS4 remaster that launched in 2014 is still an excellent deal. It looks excellent and still plays great (not to mention the fact that it runs at 60 FPS), and can be purchased for $20. For that price, you also get access to the widely beloved Factions multiplayer mode, so in many ways, it’s actually a better option than the PS5 remake for those looking to go back to this modern classic.

GOD OF WAR

A much more recent entry than some of the other games we’ve spoken about on this list, 2018’s God of War is a game that people are going to keep going back to for years- something that is price is only bound to make easier. For a price of $20, you can dive into the action-adventure game’s rollercoaster, emotional journey, which combines narrative and action gameplay in one of the best PS4 experiences ever.

HORIZON ZERO DAWN

Speaking of landmark first party PS4 titles, Horizon Zero Dawn is another stellar game that you can dive into for a surprisingly low price right now. Guerrilla’s post-apocalyptic open world action RPG is retailing for a price of just $20 on PS4 right now, which is more than a reasonable price for a game that you can clock dozens of hours in. On PC, however, it’s priced at $50, so there’s definitely some disparity in its cross-platform pricing.

GEARS OF WAR 3

Yes, Gears of War 3 is more than a decade old, but it still remains one of the best third person shooters we’ve ever played, to the extent that even many much more recent ones can’t hold a candle to it. With an excellent campaign and addictive multiplayer offerings, at a price of just $12, the Xbox 360 title is almost unreasonably cheap right now. On Xbox Series X, in fact, it even benefits from visual and technical boosts, so if you haven’t played this masterpiece, now is the time to jump in.

GRAND THEFT AUTO 5

Nearly eleven years on from launch, Grand Theft Auto 5 keeps selling better than most games do instantly upon release, and doubtless, its reasonable pricing has had a hand to play in that. Currently being sold for a price of $20 on Xbox and PlayStation, the open world game is one that you can pour countless hours into without even the hint of boredom. We’re about a year away (and hopefully no more than that) from Grand Theft Auto 6, so if somehow you still haven’t played GTA 5, now’s the time.

BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT

Rocksteady Studios’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League might not be what so many wanted the studio’s next game to be, but you can always go back to its older releases to remind yourself of why the studio is as beloved as it is. Batman: Arkham Knight has had some pretty rough luck with its platform-specific versions on PC and Nintendo Switch, but on PlayStation and Xbox, it’s still an incredible game to go back to- not least because you can do so for just $20 right now.

BLOODBORNE

Whether or not we’ll ever get a Bloodborne remaster, port, or even 60 FPS patch (much less a sequel) is anyone’s guess (though signs point to a big, fat no), but thankfully, FromSoftware’s eldritch horror action RPG is a stellar game even in its original form, even today. Like a number of other first party PlayStation titles we’ve mentioned here, it can be purchased for just $20, which, for what’s irrefutably one of the greatest games ever made, is a shockingly good price.

METAL GEAR SOLID 5

Metal Gear Solid 5’s legacy will always be a complicated one for so many reasons, but one thing that’s hard to dispute is that, for all its flaws (of which it has many), it’s somehow still an absolute masterpiece in more ways than one, from its timeless emergent stealth gameplay to the incredible design it sports across its many missions. Diving into all of that and more for a price of just $20 is more than a fair deal, to say the very least.

With so many titles that explore a range of settings, be it real-world or fantastical, there’s just something about the post-apocalyptic that makes it so endearing. Perhaps it’s that feeling of surviving against all odds or starting with a clean slate in a world where the old rules no longer apply. Maybe it’s discovering the eventual consequences of humanity’s actions if left unabetted.

Regardless, it’s a fantasy that many enjoy indulging in, and there are some great games to help with that. Check out 25 of the best post-apocalyptic games available on PC and what makes them so fun.

Fallout 4

Controversial though it may be among hardcore fans, Fallout 4 remains the most accessible game in the series, with some of the best combat. The Commonwealth is pretty massive, with multiple points of interest to explore, junk to pick up and settlements to build up. Learning more about the post-nuclear fallout world, whether it’s HalluciGen Inc and its suspicious chemicals that drive enemies mad or the creepiness of Dunwich Borers, is enticing. Plus, you can lead gangs of raiders or build robots with the DLC. Just steer clear of Preston Garvey. Your sanity will thank you.

Guerrilla and Sony's open world action RPG franchise is continuing to enjoy impressive commercial success.

With Horizon Forbidden West in 2022 and the much more recent releases of Horizon Call of the Mountain and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, Guerrilla and Sony’s post-apocalyptic franchise has seen plenty of activity of late, and that, as you one might expect, has gone hand-in-hand with accelerated sales for the series.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Guerrilla has revealed that as of April 16, 2023, Horizon Forbidden West has sold over 8.4 million units worldwide since its launch last February, with the Horizon series’ total sales currently standing at 32.7 million units. In addition to this, the developer says the series has also seen “millions” more players through PlayStation’s subscription services and initiatives, including PlayStation Plus and Play at Home.

Guerrilla hasn’t mentioned specifically what the current sales figures for Horizon Zero Dawn and PS VR2 exclusive Call of the Mountain are. At last count, as of February last year, the former had sold over 20 million units.

Unsurprisingly, Guerrilla has plenty else in the pipeline where future Horizon titles are concerned. The developer has confirmed that not only is it working on a sequel to Horizon Forbidden West, but also a standalone co-op Horizon title. Meanwhile, leaks have claimed that an enhanced PS5 remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn is also in the works, though allegedly, that isn’t being developed internally by Guerrilla.

A Horizon TV series is also currently in development at Netflix.

Without warning or official communication, Sony has raised prices for several of its PlayStation PC titles by varying degrees.

Sony has rapidly expanded its presence in the PC gaming space over the last few years, having brought over some of PlayStation’s biggest and most well-received titles over to the platform. However, the company seems to be making some decisions that are unlikely to go down well with the masses.

As spotted recently by a ResetEra user, Sony seems to have quietly raised the prices of a number of its titles on Steam in various countries. Games like Returnal, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Days Gone have all seen price increases to varying degrees in a number of regions, including Argentina, Japan, Canada, Colombia, China, South Korea, and Chile.

The price increases vary from title to title and country to country. In Argentina, for instance, they’ve increased from a range of 4199-5999 Pesos to 8499-9999 Pesos; in Canada, they’ve gone from $59.99-69.99 to $64.99-79.99; while in Japan, they’ve increased from 4900-6490 Yen to 6490-7590 Yen (via PlayStation LifeStyle).

Sony hasn’t yet officially communicated anything related to said price increases, so it’s currently unknown whether the changes will be restricted to Steam or if they’ll be happening in other regions as well.

The poor quality of The Last of Us Part 1 on PC leads to questions about Sony's porting process, especially heading into the future.

If you’ve played The Last of Us Part 1 on PC recently, you’ve probably noticed it’s pretty bad. Not the game, mind you, which is a good remake of one of the greatest titles ever made. It’s the quality of the PC port, which drew a “Mostly Negative” review score on Steam at launch. Though it’s since changed to “Mixed”, only 45 percent of user reviews are positive.

Where do you even begin with the issues? Crashes, shader compilation that could take 40 minutes to more than an hour, terrible hair, characters suddenly being drenched in cutscenes, Tess floating in the air – the list goes on. Naughty Dog has released some hotfixes, but players are still reporting issues.

How could this happen, though? The Last of Us isn’t just one of Sony’s flagship franchises but the most hallowed. So what the heck happened to the PC port?

It’s important to step back and examine how we got here. Whether due to the success of Microsoft’s first-party Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S titles on PC or Sony no longer capable of ignoring the platform, it wanted a piece of the PC pie.

Despite how much it touted its exclusives and how you could only experience them on PlayStation, it opened up to the idea of bringing them to PC. This isn’t to say that PlayStation never published anything on the platform but starting with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2020, it rolled out its marquee first-party titles for PC players.

There was just one problem. Well, several problems. Horizon’s PC port was subpar. Players with hardware far above the recommended requirements reported crashes, performance issues and poor optimization. Considering it was a PS4 title and ports like Death Stranding were very well-optimized, fans were less than forgiving.

Even six months later, there were still issues – Digital Foundry reported bugs with screen space ambient occlusion, LOD bias and even characters freezing on transitions while everything else moved normally.

However, despite all the issues at launch, Horizon Zero Dawn proved successful, selling over 700,000 copies in the first month. There’s no doubt Sony went ahead with commissioning other ports, like Bend Studio’s Days Gone and God of War (2018).

The former was handled in-house by Bend, and while it seemed to receive a strong response at launch, a quick peek at the developer’s list of known issues reveals a litany of problems. Stuttering, no HDR option for those with HDR monitors, lack of controller input, mouse issues, crashes – it just goes on. It addressed those problems, yet Sony needed a more long-term solution.

With God of War (2018), Santa Monica Studio worked directly with Jetpack Interactive for two years to ensure it was up to snuff. However, in 2021, Sony acquired Nixxes Software, known for its excellent PC ports. It handled the later patches for Horizon Zero Dawn and began working with Insomniac on porting Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales to PC.

Even with the hit-or-miss quality of its ports, Sony continued raking in sales. By May 2022, Horizon Zero Dawn sold almost 2.4 million on PC. Days Gone was 852,000 units sold, while God of War (2018), the most recent port, hit 971,000 sales. Things seemed to be on the right track, and sure enough, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered launched in August 2022 to extensive acclaim. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, available in November of that year, was also a great port. Oddly enough, its peak concurrent players weren’t too great, but at least there were no issues.

Unfortunately, there was trouble brewing. Iron Galaxy Studios was contracted to work on Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and sure enough, several issues were reported when it launched in October 2022. Sackboy: A Big Adventure, released in the same month, was sadly overshadowed, though it didn’t seem to have any major problems. You could probably chalk this up to developer Sumo Digital’s long-running history of multi-platform development, but I digress.

In February 2023, Returnal was released on PC, with Climax Studios in charge alongside Housemarque. Players reported Fatal Errors, bugs, stuttering, performance issues and whatnot, which is a shame considering this is a PS5-exclusive title. It received patches to improve the overall quality, but there are still bugs. Then The Last of Us Part 1, ported by Iron Galaxy Studios with Naughty Dog released on PC recently, and the rest is history.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft’s initial PC ports were far from perfect, with more than a few kinks to work out. However, it now has several acclaimed exclusives on PC. Its Xbox titles are now synonymous with day-one PC releases and Game Pass, which seemed like a pipe dream less than a decade ago.

Where Sony could lack is the proper infrastructure. Don’t get me wrong – optimizing games is tough enough, especially PS5 exclusives. There’s a reason some PC ports took so long to release after their initial console versions. While Nixxes was acquired and had its pipeline for ports, the same may not apply to some of the other developers.

Whether this is a resource issue, not enough time or experts to help – because Nixxes is only one studio – the quality has been very uneven.

There isn’t a clear solution – Sony can’t simply acquire other studios that are also good at porting. It also needs a proper pipeline for its PC ports to go through, where a dedicated team handles things with the developers over a significant period. It may have seemed like a good idea to give the Spider-Man games to Nixxes and then figure things out with other developers, but that’s not a long-term solution.

Speaking on the issue of time, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst stated in October 2022 that first-party titles would launch on PC at least a year after the PS5 version. Some quick math shows that The Last of Us Part 1 launched in September 2022 for PS5 and in March 2023 for PC.

That’s not a whole lot of time, and Sony could be accused of trying to cash in on the breakout success of The Last of Us HBO series. What’s more likely is that the PC version was always meant to release around the same time. Problems emerged, there was a three-week delay to fix major issues – because it has to arrive before the fiscal year ends – and things didn’t go as planned.

With plans to release ten live-service titles for PS5 by March 2026 and first-party live-service games launching simultaneously on PC and PS5, Sony desperately needs to sort out its PC ports. The Last of Us standalone multiplayer title is clearly a forerunner for its live-service ambitions, and Sony has done well by bringing in talent like Bungie to help out.

Hopefully, its recent PC debacles have raised enough alarms to warrant introspection and necessary changes to its current pipeline. The initial steps can be painful – again, just ask Microsoft – but with how serious PlayStation is about catering to PC players, it must aspire to a higher standard.

2023 and beyond is looking to be a fruitful time for fans of remakes and remasters, and here are 13 of the best to look forward to.

Remakes have picked up a lot of traction in recent years, and this industry trend doesn’t seem to be dying out anytime soon. 2023 and beyond is looking to be a great time for promising remakes of classic titles. To that end, we present the best remakes of 2023 and beyond:

System Shock

System Shock is widely considered to be one of the best immersive sims of all time, and while the original still has an irrefutable charm to its aged gameplay – the game would undoubtedly benefit from a full-fledged remake. Thankfully, Nightdive Studios is working on just that – and the project looks really promising with completely redone visuals and smoothed out modern gameplay. System Shock remake releases for all major last-gen and current-gen console platforms and PC in March 2023, and those wanting to get a taste of the experience can try out a demo through Steam right now.
