IO Interactive - Project Dragon

After numerous rumors on Project Dragon dating back to 2021, IO Interactive has finally confirmed its upcoming online fantasy RPG. Codenamed Project Fantasy, it’s a new IP with a new world “built from the core to entertain players and expand for many years to come.” Though described as “familiar,” the developer says it’s “going on a journey unlike any we have been on before.”

It’s inspired by the Fighting Fantasy books, where players work together in a fantasy quest run by a game master. The idea of a “diverse group of individuals with different skills and strengths can work together and become more than the sum of their parts” inspired the developer. IO Interactive also confirmed that all of its studios, from Copenhagen and Malmö to Barcelona, are developing it (as with all its games).

Of course, this is only the start, and the developer is currently hiring for the project. It didn’t confirm the platforms, or if it’s published by Xbox Game Studios, as rumors have suggested. However, its Senior Combat Designer listing indicates a release for console and PC, so that’s a start.

One thing is for sure – it’s going to be a long wait, especially since the studio won’t release anything until at least April 2025, so stay tuned.
