Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Director Wants to Make a Third Game

Respawn's Stig Asmussen "always wanted to see this as a trilogy," and development on Unreal Engine 5 is a "pretty safe assumption."

Respawn Entertainment is prepping for the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but director Stig Asmussen doesn’t want to stop there. Speaking on IGN Unfiltered, he expressed interest in making a third game, thus completing the trilogy. It could happen if the second game does well in sales.

It may seem early to consider another sequel, but Asmussen reveals that Jedi: Survivor discussions were ongoing before the first game was released. “We were already talking about the second game. I mean, frankly, we were talking beyond. And these are conversations that, when we’re breaking this story with Lucasfilm, it’s like: ‘Well, where are we going with the second game?’

“I always wanted to see this as a trilogy. How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game? We had a pretty decent idea of the timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there are ideas of what we could do beyond that, as well.”

If a third game happens, it’s likely to be on Unreal Engine 5 (Jedi: Survivor uses Unreal Engine 4). Though Asmussen didn’t outright confirm it, he did say it’s a “pretty safe assumption.” “I’m not going to say it’s going to be easy. I mean, we have a lot of proprietary things that we’ve warped the engine into doing what it does for Jedi right now, and we would have to retool some of that to get it to work on any new engine.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on April 28th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Along with a darker tone, it offers five Lightsaber combat styles, massive new planets to explore, expanded optional content like the Jedi Chambers, and AI allies that can assist Cal.
