Last Friday, Actors Theater of Louisville released a new video game called “Plague Doctor: Contagion 430 BCE-2020 AD,” available on Steam for $ 2.99 plus tax.

The historical first-person fiction game takes the player through four storylines, each set in a specific city at a time when a viral epidemic is wreaking havoc on the population. In one chapter, the player must speak to the victims of the disease to document the symptoms of the virus; in another, the player inspects a plagued ship to decide whether it should be allowed to enter a busy port city.

Currently the game has two chapters available for the game (“Athens 430 BCE: TYPHUS” and “Marseille 1720: Bubonic Plague”), and the other two (“Philadelphia 1918: SPANISH FLU” and “Louisville 2020: COVID-19” ) will be available for free download next year. The Louisville Chapter will see the player “experience the disorienting reality of midlife.as Black Lives Matter protests “shake the city”.

“Plague Doctor” is part of Actors Theatre’s seasonal change to deliver more digital media content and integrate media technology into more traditional stage performances. Her performance of “A Christmas Carol” later this year will incorporate virtual and augmented reality.

Actors Theater Executive Artistic Director Robert Barry Fleming co-wrote the script for the play with Actors Theater Literary Director Jenni Page-White.

Plague Doctor is the product of Louisville-based independent video game studio Two Scoop Games.
